The Moss family
Clay Moss Garden Centre
We are a family owned and operated business and have been operating a greenhouse in the Town of Stavely for the past 2 years. We have been living in the general area for 10 years and operating the Garden Centre for 3 years.. We have been gardening for over 13 years and have been extremely successful with our production most years. It is our belief that our society is on an unsustainable path, and our goal is to help shift that back towards balance. This is a major motivator because we want our children and grandchildren to inherit a world worth living in.
For our third year of operations, we will be operating as a mobile popup garden centre. We will be selling bedding plants and vegetables, as well as potting soil.
Bio:
Clay Moss
Clay Moss is the co-founder of Clay Moss Garden Centre, along with his wife Marika. Growing plants is in Clay’s blood. Much of his initial interest in starting plants came from watching his mother start plants as a child, she learned from her father who in addition to farming was an avid gardener as well. Chat is continuing the tradition by reaching his two sons. Clay’s love of plants was not limited to gardening, when he was in his early 20’s he became an Arborist. As his skill in climbing and pruning trees grew, so did his passion for nature, trees, and other plants. Over the first ten years of his career as an Arborist, Clay continued to study plant biology and became a specialist in tree health care, disease, and pest management.
Gardening and growing plants remained a constant hobby for Clay, with each year that passed he built on his knowledge and skills. In 2014 he moved with his family to an acreage outside of Stavely, near where his ancestors had settled over a hundred years earlier. Here he started to scale up his gardening and has enjoyed great success with it, along with a number of small farming enterprises as Misty Spruce Farms. In the lasts few years, he has been so successful at his plant starts that he has had to give many away, which prompted a shift direction towards plant sales. In 2021 the Moss' family moved into Stavely and invested in a better hard sided greenhouse.
Beyond the world of plants, Clay also spends time volunteering. He is a volunteer firefighter through which he was honoured to have been part of the response that saved the town of Waterton in 2007. As well as this he has served as a volunteer with various other organizations and at numerous events over the years.
Clay’s belief is that we are a part of nature, not separate from it and thus we must seek to be in balance with it. His passion for plants and living systems are what has driven him to success and will continue to carry him forward.
